This year, the CQA Conference is being held in Ottawa, the tulip capital of Canada. The theme is 'celebrating 25 years of quilting’. So, I decided to do a historical piece about tulips.
This is an extract from the artist statement I submitted
:
Every Spring, Ottawa is engulfed in tulips in full bloom. I want this quilt to serve as a reminder of how this humble bulb sustained the Dutch people during the ‘hunger winter’ of 1944, and peak the interest of those who want to know more about how all these tulips ended up over here in Ottawa. This flower is much more than just eye candy.
